Changing down a gear or twoSubmitted by Ali on Mon, 2006-04-10 18:03.
Friday 31st March - ***LAST DAY AT WORK*** was scrawled across the page in my diary, beyond that there were no more dates. Life was going to change. For weeks I'd felt I'd been living in a strange double-time, and as the remaining pages in my diary became fewer this seemed the best check on the passing of time. In the universe of work time was a tight thread I was trying to stretch ever further; back at home, in spite of the endless 'things to do', time was a stagnating pond whose depths I prefered to avoid exploring.
But then it was 31st March. Things at work had reached some sort of conclusion late the evening before as my email inbox emptied and unfinished business was added to the ever-growing 'issues to be resolved' document I landed my colleagues with.
One last meeting in Birmingham, a lovely night with Dave and Anna in Aylesbury and then it was 1st April - the day two particular fools had been very much looking forward to for quite some time. I collected Malc from Heathrow and with a huge sense of relief we were finally home.
It's been eventful and exciting (sometimes a little overwhelming), but most of all this week has been quite wonderful. Even I have managed to slip down a few gears and start to take life a little more of a gentle pace.
