Queso

I hope I spelled cheese in Spanish correctly. I´m already losiong my hard learned 50 words as they get replaced with three or four in Portuguese. Anyway, you may have noticed that not much has fone on in the way of cheese reviews lately. This is not (alas) because we have stopped eating cheese, but because not a lot of it has merited comment. My brother Tom warned us as we were about to leave France to eat all the cheese we wanted because there´s only one kind of cheese in Spain. He was sort of joking, but "many a true word..." and all that. before I continue a small disclaimer as there are a number of (i am sure fantasic) local cheeses available in Northern Spain, but unfortunately we didn´t make teh 2k up a hill to the farm, or we´d got a full food pannier when the opportunity arose, so we did miss out here. We did get to taste one local cheese, however, it was offered to us by a fellow cyclist curious to talk to us and kind enough to share his delicious feta-like cheese. This was on the pass in the Picos and tasted especially good with the view.
Otherwise Spanish cheese was largely Queso, Queso semi-curado or Queso curado. this was essentially one bland rubbery cheese, which even with full curado (mature) status was pretty bland and flavourless. Still, accompanied by bottled red peppers and lots of olives it was alright.

watch this space for news on Portuguese cheeses coming up next time.
